Preview Quality

Preview Quality draws the preview smaller and scales it back up to fit, so a heavy project that lags or looks choppy runs more smoothly. It never changes an export. Frame Job has no proxy files or optimised media, so this is the setting to try first.

Menu
View ▸ Preview Quality

Choose View ▸ Preview Quality ▸ Full, Half or Quarter. The menu checks the current choice. The preview redraws straight away, paused or playing.

Choice Draws the preview at 1920 × 1080 canvas
Full (default) The canvas size 1920 × 1080
Half Half the width and height 960 × 540
Quarter A quarter of the width and height 480 × 270

The choice is remembered between launches, for every project. There’s no keyboard shortcut, and no agent tool sets it. The Preview Window shows the same picture, so it draws at the same quality.

Quality only affects the preview. It never changes an export, a saved frame or a frame an agent renders.

A lower choice saves the work of drawing each pixel of the picture. Decoding your footage, drawing shadows and playing the sound cost the same at every choice, so a project held back by those won’t speed up as much.

Frame Job doesn’t make proxies, optimised media or a render cache for video. It always plays your original files. If 4K footage still stutters or drops frames at Quarter, decoding is what’s slow, so transcode it to an easier codec, such as ProRes, before you import it.

The picture always keeps the canvas’s exact shape, so that handles stay in the right place on it. On an awkward canvas size that means the preview can draw a little larger than the fraction, never smaller:

Canvas Half Quarter
999 × 666 501 × 334 252 × 168
1001 × 667 1001 × 667 1001 × 667

A canvas whose sides share no common factor, like 1001 × 667, can’t be scaled down evenly, so it draws at full size at every choice.
