Transitions

A transition carries the picture and sound from one clip into the next. In Frame Job it isn’t a separate object you drop on a cut. It’s what plays wherever two clips on the same track overlap.

A transition plays across the overlap between two clips on the same track, and the overlap’s length is the transition’s duration. To make a transition longer, you make the overlap longer, by dragging or trimming a clip or by typing a Duration.

The later clip carries the transition: it’s the transition into that clip, and it’s stored with that clip. To change one, select the clip that comes second.

There are thirteen styles, from Cross Dissolve to pushes, wipes and a zoom. Add or remove a transition has the ways to make one, and The Transition section has its settings.

Two clips on different tracks don’t transition, however they line up. They’re layers, and the front one draws over the back one.

The quickest transition is an overlap. When an edit leaves a clip overlapping the clip before it on the same track, and the later clip has no transition stored, Frame Job adds a Cross Dissolve. It’s eased (Ease In Out) and crossfades the sound (Crossfade Audio on).

That holds however the overlap came about:

  • Dragging a clip onto its neighbour, or trimming an edge past it.
  • A duplicate, a paste or an insert.
  • A ripple delete, a Close Gap or Shift Clips Left.
  • A nest or an un-nest.

A clip that already has a transition stored keeps it.

Two clips on a track may overlap only as a transition, and two rules limit how:

  • A clip can overlap at most one neighbour on each side.
  • An overlap can be at most half as long as the shorter of the two clips. A 4 s clip and a 10 s clip can overlap by up to 2 s.

Clips never push each other out of the way, so Frame Job won’t make a move, trim, nudge, duplicate, gap close or nest that breaks either rule. A drag stops at the last place that fits, and anything else beeps and gives the reason at the foot of the inspector.

Two edits work differently:

  • Paste and Un-nest put a clip that would break the rule on a new track at the front.
  • A ripple delete is never stopped by these rules. A clip it slides onto a neighbour gets a Cross Dissolve.

See How edits work.

The overlap draws as a hatched zone across the cut, with a solid edge down each side. The transition’s name sits in the zone when the whole word fits. On a short transition the name is left out, and the Transition section still shows it.

See Reading a clip on the timeline.

Choosing None removes a stored transition but not the overlap. While the two clips overlap they keep blending, as a linear cross dissolve with no sound crossfade: both clips play at their own level across the overlap. The timeline draws no hatched zone for it.

The Transition section says what’s there. Its summary reads “none”, and it shows Linear and Crossfade Audio off. Setting either one stores a Cross Dissolve with exactly the values shown, plus your change.

This lasts until the next move, trim or other edit that repositions clips on that track, which gives the overlap the usual eased Cross Dissolve. To get a hard cut back, move or trim the clips so they no longer overlap.

A transition stored on a clip that overlaps nothing does nothing until there’s an overlap. Drag two clips apart and the later one keeps its transition, with no zone on the timeline. Overlap them again and the same style comes back.

The Transition section only appears for a single selected clip that overlaps the clip before it. To clear a stored transition with no overlap, select the clip and choose Clip ▸ Transition ▸ None, which is available for any selection.

Adjustment clips can’t take a transition, so Frame Job won’t make a move, trim or other edit that overlaps an adjustment clip with another clip. Fade one with opacity instead.

The first clip on a track and a clip after a gap have nothing to overlap, so the Transition menu skips them.

  • Two overlapping clips with no picture get a transition too. Only their sound changes, so the crossfade settings matter and the style doesn’t show.
  • After Detach Audio, Crossfade Audio on the video clips’ transition has no effect, because their own sound is off. To crossfade the sound, overlap the detached audio clips and give them a transition of their own.
  • Remove Silences and Remove Filler Words never cut into a transition’s overlap.
  • A clip always blends normally while it’s in a transition, whatever blend mode it has.
  • A clip draws without motion blur for the frames of a transition.

add_transition makes an overlap at a hard cut. set_transition sets or clears the style, set_transition_style sets its curve and crossfade, and set_transition_duration changes the length of an overlap. A move_clip that makes an overlap gets the same Cross Dissolve as a drag. See Tools: transitions.
