What an action can animate

An action can animate most of what’s in the Clip tab. This page goes through the tab by sub-tab, so you can see what ramps smoothly, what switches when the action ends, and what can’t animate.

With an action selected, the Clip tab marks each row. A row that switches shows “at end” once the action changes it, and most rows that can’t animate show ⊘. See Set what an action animates to for all the marks.

One rule applies everywhere. A section you turn on inside an action has no numbers to ramp from, so it appears whole when the action ends. For a gradual start, turn the section on for the clip first and animate its numbers. Turning a section off inside an action turns it off when the action ends.

An action can animate every value in the Picture sub-tab, apart from the few under What never animates.

Section Ramps Switches at the end
Transform Scale, Position X, Position Y, Rotation, Opacity, Motion Blur Blend
Behind Subject Behind subject
Crop Left, Top, Right, Bottom
Corner Radius Radius
Chroma Key Key Color, Tolerance, Softness, Spill Key out a color
Background Edge, Feather Background
Cursor Size, Ripple size Show cursor, Style, Clicks, Ripple color
Shadow Color, Opacity, Blur, Angle, Distance Drop shadow
Filters Each filter’s Amount A filter’s kind
Reflection Opacity, Height, Gap, Falloff Mirror the layer below itself
Spotlight Center X, Center Y, Width, Height, Feather, Dim, Zoom Spotlight a region, Shape
Obscure Each region’s position, size, Amount and Feather A region’s kind and Shape

Filters and obscure regions follow the list rule. Changing a value inside an existing entry animates, but adding or removing an entry changes the clip.

The Layout section’s Switch at Playhead makes actions of its own. See Camera layouts.

An action can animate the whole grade in the Color sub-tab.

Section What animates
Light Every slider
Color Every slider
Wheels Each wheel and its master strip
Curves Every channel, whatever the number of points
Look Amount
Adjustment, on an adjustment clip Strength
Qualifier, on an adjustment clip Each range’s numbers. Invert and turning a range on or off switch at the end

Choosing a look or a LUT, changing it or removing it changes the clip itself, even with an action selected. Only Amount animates. If an agent gives an action a different look, it switches at the end. See Animate a grade.

An action can animate the Sound sub-tab’s Volume and Fades sections, and every other audio setting apart from the few listed under What never animates. ⌥-clicking the volume line adds volume actions too.

Numbers ramp. Switches change when the action ends: Mute, Mix to mono, Channels, the EQ’s slots and slopes, Hum’s mains and harmonics, the Leveller’s Response, and turning a section on or off. Voice Isolation is the exception: Isolate voice and Amount both ramp from 0 on a clip with none.

Normalize sets the clip’s own level whatever is selected, and its row shows a small “clip” tag while an action is selected.

See Animate sound with actions.

An action can animate the Text sub-tab’s style, size and colours.

Section Ramps Switches at the end
Content The words
Font Size Family, Style
Style Color, Line spacing, Tracking Align, Vertical, UPPERCASE
Outline Width, Color Outline
Backdrop Fill, Padding, Radius Backdrop
Box Width Mode
Reveal In, Out Reveal

Choosing one of the Presets with an action selected sets the action’s end state, and each value then ramps or switches as above.

A word caption page’s timing can’t animate, because it belongs to the speech. There’s no inspector section for its word colours and pop scale, so only an agent can put those in an action. They ramp when it does. See Word caption styles.

For the rows themselves, see Font and text style.

An action can animate a graphic clip’s properties in the Properties section of the Graphic sub-tab. Numbers and colours ramp, while strings, booleans, choices and images switch at the end. A property the graphic marks as not animatable shows ⊘, and so do the Size and Timeline sections.

See Animate graphic properties.

An action can change a media clip’s playback rate, which makes a speed ramp. With an action selected, Rate in the Clip sub-tab’s Speed section sets the rate the action ends at, and the clip holds that rate afterwards.

  • The rate goes from ×0.1 to ×1000.
  • The clip keeps its start and length, and plays more or less of its source.
  • Frame Job won’t set a rate that would read past the end of the media, and it names the largest rate that fits.
  • Above ×12 the clip’s sound is left out, and Frame Job asks first. See Sound at high speed.

Keep pitch and Fit to always change the clip.

These change the clip itself whatever is selected. Unless the list says otherwise, their rows are marked ⊘ in the Clip tab while an action is selected, and a section where every row is ⊘ says “Actions don’t animate this. Edits here change the clip.”

  • Clip sub-tab: the Motion presets section, and Keep pitch and Fit to in the Speed section. The Timing and Transition sections change the clip too, and their rows carry no mark.
  • Sound sub-tab: Ducking, the fade shapes (In shape and Out shape), the Voice Effect, and a nest clip’s Mix to mono.
  • Picture sub-tab: the Hide While Silent section, Remove background, Subject and the header’s Reset (which carries no mark) in the Background section, and Smoothing, Hide when idle and Polish in the Cursor section.
  • Filters and Obscure: adding or removing a filter or a region. These buttons show a small “clip” tag while an action is selected. Changing a value inside an existing entry still animates.
  • Shape sub-tab: a shape’s kind, size, corner radius, stroke, fill, gradient and arrows. Its position, scale and opacity animate like any clip’s, through the Picture sub-tab. Dragging a shape’s handles on the canvas to resize it changes the shape itself.
  • Graphic sub-tab: the Size and Timeline sections, and any property the graphic marks as not animatable.

A track’s own volume, pan, compressor and limiter aren’t part of a clip, so an action can’t reach them.

Every colour that ramps in an action blends through the OKLab colour space. It keeps the midpoints even and avoids the muddy middle of a straight RGB blend. Pure red to pure blue passes through #8c53a2 halfway, for example, where a straight RGB blend would give the darker #800080.

This covers the shadow, chroma key, text, outline, backdrop, word caption and graphic colours. A cursor’s Ripple color doesn’t ramp, and switches at the end. Opacity moves separately from the colour. A colour whose two ends are equal stays exact all the way through, and there’s no setting for any of this.

Shape colours can’t animate at all.

set_action_end writes an action’s end state. It takes the same keys as set_video, set_audio and set_text, grouped under video, audio and text, with a graphic’s properties under graphic. A rate goes in speed, beside those groups, and speed: null takes it back out.

Frame Job won’t accept the keys that belong to the clip: video.motion, video.hide_silent, text.words, video.cutout.subject and video.cutout.quality. See set_action_end.
