Motion presets

A motion preset says what a clip does rather than where it is: how it arrives, how it leaves and what it does in between. It’s tied to the clip’s two ends, so it goes with the clip through a trim and there’s nothing to reposition afterwards.

Each clip has three slots, and all three can run on the same clip:

  • In is an entrance at the clip’s start: Fade, Zoom In, Zoom Out, Slide Left, Slide Right, Slide Up, Slide Down, Spin or Pop. See Entrance and exit presets.
  • Out is an exit at the clip’s end, from the same nine kinds.
  • During is a movement for the clip’s whole length: Pulse, Shake, Spin, Bounce or Drift. See During presets.

Presets work on any clip that draws a picture: video, still images, text, shapes, graphics and nests.

  1. Select the clip.

  2. In the Clip tab, pick the Clip sub-tab and open Motion presets, the last section. It’s closed by default.

  3. Choose a kind from In, Out or During.

  4. Set In Duration or Out Duration, or for a During movement, Amount and Period.

  5. Choose Preview to watch it loop.

If the defaults suit you, the Motion menu is quicker.

Row What it does Range Default
In How the clip enters. None and nine kinds None
In Duration How long the entrance takes. Dimmed while In is None. 0.1 to 10 s, with quick picks of 0.25, 0.5 and 1 0.5 s
Out How the clip leaves. None and nine kinds None
Out Duration How long the exit takes. Dimmed while Out is None. 0.1 to 10 s, with quick picks of 0.25, 0.5 and 1 0.5 s
During What the clip does for its whole length. None and five kinds None
Amount How strong the During movement is. Dimmed while During is None. 0 to 100%, with quick picks of 25, 50, 75 and 100 50%
Period How long one cycle of the During movement takes. Dimmed while During is None, and for Drift, which has no cycle. 0.1 to 10 s, with quick picks of 0.25, 0.5, 1 and 2 1 s
Preview Loops the clip so you can watch its motion.

The two durations and Period snap to the project’s frame grid. The In is measured from the clip’s first frame and the Out back from its last.

The section’s header sums up the first selected clip’s presets, for example “in fade · out slide left · pulse”. With no presets it reads “off”.

Clip ▸ Motion has three submenus, In, Out and During, then Preview. Each submenu lists its kinds, then None to clear the slot. They work on every selected clip that has a picture, and they’re dimmed when no selected clip has one. None of them has a keyboard shortcut.

A checkmark shows the kind every selected clip shares. If the clips disagree, nothing is checked. If none of them has a preset in that slot, None is checked. A kind can also carry an (inactive) label.

Choosing a different kind keeps the settings the slot already had: an In or Out keeps its duration, and a During keeps its amount and period. A slot that’s empty, including one you’ve set to None, starts at the defaults: 0.5 s for an In or Out, and 50% with a 1 s period for a During.

To clear one slot, choose None. To clear all three, choose Reset in the section’s header. Reset shows only when the first selected clip has a preset, and it clears every selected clip.

Each change is one undo step, however many clips are selected.

With several clips selected, a change to one slot leaves each clip’s other slots as they were. Choosing a new In kind doesn’t touch anyone’s Out, and each clip keeps its own In duration.

The section shows the first selected clip’s values, with mixed beside a row where the clips differ. That has two effects to watch for:

  • In Duration, Out Duration, Amount and Period only change the clips that have a preset in that slot. The others are left alone.
  • Those rows are dimmed by the first clip alone. If the first selected clip has no In, In Duration is dimmed even when other selected clips have one.

Choose Preview in the section, or Clip ▸ Motion ▸ Preview. Frame Job sets the in/out range to the clip, turns Loop on, moves the playhead to the clip’s start and plays.

The clip goes round until you stop it.

With several clips selected, it previews the first selected clip that has a picture.

The range and Loop stay until you clear them. Choose Mark ▸ Clear Range (⌥X) and click the Loop button in the toolbar. A range you’d already set is replaced.

Small marks on a clip’s name strip show its presets:

  • A wedge at each end along the bottom of the strip stands for an In or an Out. It’s as long as the preset’s duration at the current zoom, at least 2 points wide so a short preset still shows, and never wider than the clip. The Clip tab’s action lane shows the same two wedges, hanging from its top.
  • A wave symbol at the right end of the strip stands for a During movement. On a clip too narrow to fit it, the symbol is left out.

See Reading a clip on the timeline for everything else a clip draws.

A preset works relative to the clip. Frame Job takes the clip’s own placement and any actions first, then applies the preset on top:

  • Its scale and opacity multiply the clip’s own. A clip at 50% opacity fades in to 50%, not 100%.
  • Its rotation and offset add to the clip’s own.
  • Anything that changes the clip’s size or turns it does so about the clip’s visible centre, after any crop.
  • The drawn size stays within the 1% to 1,000% that Scale allows.

The three slots add up the same way, so a clip can slide in while it pulses.

The fields in the Clip tab show the clip’s own numbers, even while the preview and the export show it moving. Halfway through a Zoom In, Scale still reads what you typed. That’s why editing a clip’s position or size works the same with a preset on it.

A drag on the canvas changes the clip’s own position, starting from where it sits without the preset. If you drag partway through a preset, the distance you drag is added to that un-moved position, and the preset keeps playing on top of it. To place a clip by eye, park the playhead where its In has finished and its Out hasn’t started.

An In and an Out can together last longer than the clip. Frame Job keeps both and shortens them in proportion to their lengths, so the entrance ends on the frame where the exit begins. A 2 s In and a 1 s Out on a 1.5 s clip play as 1 s and 0.5 s. An In or Out alone that’s longer than the clip plays over the clip’s whole length.

On the timeline the wedges aren’t shortened, so they overlap. That’s how to spot it. In Duration and Out Duration keep what you set too, so if you lengthen the clip later, the presets get their full time back.

An In or Out with a zero duration can come from an agent. Frame Job keeps it but it does nothing, and it draws no wedge. It’s marked so you can fix it:

  • The section’s summary reads, for example, “in fade (inactive)”.
  • The Clip ▸ Motion submenus read Fade (inactive), or Fade (some inactive) when only some of the selected clips with that kind have a zero duration.
  • A note at the top of the section reads “Selection includes inactive In motion (zero duration). Increase Duration to reactivate; choose None to clear.” It names In, Out or In and Out, and it counts every selected clip.

Changing the kind doesn’t fix it, because a new kind keeps the old duration. Raise In Duration or Out Duration, or choose None.

An action animates a property to a value you set, over a span you place on the clip. A preset is anchored to the clip’s ends and says what the clip does. Use a preset for an entrance, an exit or a repeating movement, and an action when a value has to reach a particular number at a particular moment.

A preset is never part of an action, and no action can animate one. While an action is selected, the section’s rows are marked ⊘ and the section reads “Actions don’t animate this. Edits here change the clip.” Your edits there write the clip, as they do with no action selected, and Reset is still available.

Edit What happens to the presets
Trim Each preset moves with its edge and keeps its length.
Split The first half keeps the In and gives up the Out, and the second half keeps the Out and gives up the In, so the cut doesn’t play an exit and an entrance. Both halves keep the During.
Change the speed The presets aren’t rescaled. A 0.5 s In stays 0.5 s, and a clip that gets much shorter can make its presets shorten.
Freeze frame The still has no preset, and it sits at the clip’s un-moved position, so a freeze taken mid-motion can jump.
Add Blurred Background The backdrop copy doesn’t move. The clip in front keeps its presets.
Duplicate, Detach Audio and Paste The presets are kept.
Paste Attributes Presets are copied with the rest of the picture settings.

A During movement restarts at each cut, because each piece is a clip of its own. Remove Silences on a clip with Pulse or Drift can make it jump at the cuts.

  • A preset moves the picture only. A Fade leaves the sound as it is, so use audio fades for that.
  • A preset on a nest moves everything inside the nest together.
  • Adjustment clips have the section and draw the marks, but there’s no picture to move. Only a preset’s fade has an effect, and it fades the clip’s strength.
  • Motion blur blurs a preset’s movement like any other.
  • Zoom to Region works out its zoom without a During movement, and tells you so with “This clip has During motion — the zoom is solved without it”.
  • Follow Subject works on an upright picture, so it won’t take a clip with Spin in any slot.
  • Changing the project’s frame rate moves the durations and the period onto the new frame grid.

An agent sets and clears presets with the motion key of set_video, which is null or {in, out, during}. in and out each take a kind and a duration. during takes a kind, an amount from 0 to 1 and a period, and Drift ignores its period. Durations and periods are written in an agent’s time units.

A slot left out keeps what it had, a slot set to null is cleared, and {motion: null} clears all three.

An agent isn’t held to the section’s ranges. Any duration of zero or more is accepted, which is how an inactive preset comes about, and a period can be outside 0.1 to 10 s as long as it’s above zero. Frame Job won’t accept an amount outside 0 to 1, which is 0 to 100%. Durations and periods snap to the frame grid, so the value read back can differ a little from the one sent.

get_project reports the clip’s un-moved values, so use render_frame to see a preset’s effect. set_action_end won’t take a preset, not even to clear one. See Tools: picture and grade for the full list of keys, and Entrance and exit presets for the values of kind.
