Delete, Ripple Delete and Lift
There are two delete keys, and the difference between them is what happens to the hole. ⌫ leaves it open, so everything else keeps its timing. ⌘⌫ closes it, so the rest of the timeline moves left.

Choose a delete
Section titled “Choose a delete”Each key acts on the selection, or on the in/out range when nothing is selected.
| Clips selected | Nothing selected, a range set | |
|---|---|---|
| ⌫ Edit ▸ Delete | Delete: removes the clips and leaves gaps. | Lift: removes what’s in the range and moves nothing. |
| ⌘⌫ Edit ▸ Ripple Delete | Ripple Delete: removes the clips and closes each hole. | Ripple Delete: removes what’s in the range and closes the hole. |
A selection takes priority over a range, so deselect first to act on the range. An empty range is ignored. With nothing to remove, both menu items are greyed out and the keys beep.
Delete clips and leave a gap
Section titled “Delete clips and leave a gap”Select the clips and press ⌫. They go, the gaps stay, and nothing else moves. It’s one undo step, named Delete.
- A picture takes its linked sound with it, unless the sound’s track is locked.
- A linked sound clip goes alone, and leaves its picture silent.
- A clip on a locked track that you selected by clicking is still removed.
Ripple delete clips
Section titled “Ripple delete clips”Select the clips and press ⌘⌫, or use the timeline bar’s button. The clips go, and each hole closes: everything later on every unlocked track moves left. It’s one undo step, named Ripple Delete.
- Each clip’s linked partner on an unlocked track goes too, whichever half you selected.
- A clip on a locked track that you selected is removed, but clips on locked tracks don’t move.
- Markers don’t move.
Lift a range
Section titled “Lift a range”Set an in/out range, select nothing and press ⌫. Every clip on an unlocked track is cut at both ends of the range, and what lies between is removed. Nothing moves, markers included. It’s one undo step, named Lift.
Lift is the safe cut when a mix or a caption track is already timed, because everything after the range keeps its moment. Clips on locked tracks are neither cut nor removed. If the range held nothing to remove, Frame Job beeps.
Ripple delete a range
Section titled “Ripple delete a range”Set an in/out range, select nothing and press ⌘⌫. Every clip on an unlocked track is cut at both ends of the range, what lies between is removed, and the hole closes. It’s one undo step, named Ripple Delete.
Clips on locked tracks are neither cut, removed nor moved, even inside the range. Everything else after the range moves left by its length, so a locked track falls out of step with the rest. That’s what the lock is for. Frame Job has no separate sync locks: a lock is the one way to leave a track out of a ripple.
How a ripple closes holes
Section titled “How a ripple closes holes”Each hole closes with one shift of everything after it, so clips that touched before still touch.
- A clip past several holes moves by their combined length. Two removed clips that touch leave one hole.
- A clip moves if it starts at or after the end of the hole. When you ripple-delete clips, a clip on another track that spans the hole stays where it is, and isn’t shortened.
- A clip’s linked partner on an unlocked track moves with it.
- Markers stay at their times, because a marker inside a removed stretch would have nowhere to go.
- A clip that slides onto a neighbour gets a Cross Dissolve over the overlap. A ripple is never stopped by the overlap rule.
One thing does stop a ripple. If it would push a linked clip before the start of the timeline, as a sound leading its picture in a J-cut can, nothing moves, and the foot of the inspector names both clips.
Ripple delete several ranges
Section titled “Ripple delete several ranges”An agent can cut a list of time ranges out of the timeline as one edit and one undo step, with ripple_delete_ranges. It shows as Ripple Delete under Edit ▸ Undo. Remove Silences and Remove Filler Words make the same cut from their sheets.
Ranges that touch or overlap merge into one before anything is cut, so two ranges that meet leave one hole, and all the cuts use times from the timeline as it was before the edit. Each range then behaves as a ripple-deleted range does: locked tracks are left alone and markers don’t move. See Tools: cutting and deleting.
When the delete keys do something else
Section titled “When the delete keys do something else”⌫ removes the first of these it finds:
- Words or a pause selected in the Transcript tab, while that tab has the focus. They ripple out and the gap closes, as deleting text does.
- A selected action. The action goes and its clip stays.
- The selected clips.
- The in/out range.
⌘⌫ follows the same order without the second step.
While you type in a text field, both menu items are greyed out, so ⌫ and ⌘⌫ edit the text. That covers the timecode fields, a rename and a text clip.
While a point is selected in a curve, ⌫ deletes the point and Edit ▸ Delete is greyed out.
With an agent
Section titled “With an agent”delete and ripple_delete take a list of clips. lift_range and ripple_delete_range take a start and an end time, from and to, and to has to be after from. See Tools: cutting and deleting.
