Paste Graphic Properties

Paste Graphic Properties copies what one graphic clip shows, its text and colours included, onto other clips drawn by the same graphic. Use it to give a run of lower thirds the same styling, then change the names.

Menu
Edit ▸ Paste Graphic Properties
Agent tools
paste_attributes
  1. Select the graphic clip you want to copy from and press ⌘C.

  2. Select the clips to paste onto.

  3. Choose Edit ▸ Paste Graphic Properties. It has no keyboard shortcut.

Every selected clip drawn by the same graphic takes the copied properties, as one undo step. The menu item is on when there are Frame Job clips on the clipboard and at least one graphic clip is selected.

The target ends up with exactly the copied clip’s properties, so a property left at its default on the copied clip goes back to the default on the target.

Each target keeps:

  • Its own module, size, In and Length.
  • Its position, scale and everything else outside the Properties section.
  • Any property the copied clip leaves unset and an action on the target animates, so that the action keeps its start.

If you copied several clips, only the earliest one is read.

What you’ll see Why
Some selected clips don’t change They’re drawn by another graphic, or they aren’t graphics. They’re skipped.
A beep The copied clip isn’t a graphic, no selected clip is drawn by the same graphic, or the targets already match.
An alert The copied properties can’t be stored, for example more than 64 of them. It gives the reason, and nothing changes.

Edit ▸ Paste Attributes (⌥⌘V) copies a clip’s look, such as its position and opacity, and never carries graphic properties. The two are separate on purpose, because a graphic’s properties hold its words as well as its look.

Paste Attributes Paste Graphic Properties
Position, scale, opacity and other picture settings Yes No
A graphic’s text, colours and other properties No Yes

See Paste Attributes.

Copying and pasting a graphic clip (⌘C, ⌘V) pastes a clip that names its module. The module’s .js file, fonts and pictures are not copied.

So in another project without that module, the pasted clip draws the red error card. To fix it, add the module under the same name, for example with From File… in Insert ▸ Graphic… on a file of that name. From File… also places a clip of its own, which you can delete.

See Copy, cut and paste.

An agent uses paste_attributes and has to ask for the graphic group by name, with groups: ["graphic"], since it’s never part of the default set. Unlike the menu item, a clip drawn by another graphic stops the paste with an error naming both, unless the agent sets skip_missing to skip those. See Tools: copying and nesting.
