Nudge clips

A nudge moves the selected clips by an exact number of frames, for the small corrections that are hard to make with a drag.

On a US keyboard, ⇧, and ⇧. are the keys that type < and >.

Each press is one undo step, Nudge Clips. These keys have no ⌘, so while a text field has the focus they type into it instead. See Keys and typing.

A nudge is an ordinary move, with the same rules:

  • It beeps with nothing selected.
  • A nudge that would break the overlap rule beeps and changes nothing, and the reason appears at the foot of the inspector. A nudge that lands on a small enough overlap makes a Cross Dissolve.
  • The earliest clip stops at the start of the timeline, so ⇧, on a clip three frames from the start moves it three frames. A clip already at the start beeps.
  • A linked partner on an unlocked track moves with its clip.

Unlike a drag, a nudge moves a selected clip on a locked track. It doesn’t snap, and it never changes a clip’s track.

An agent nudges with move_clip, giving the shift as a time. See Tools: moving and trimming.
