Show Selection

Show Selection replaces the preview with a grey picture of what a qualifier picks. It shows you which pixels an adjustment clip’s grade reaches, so you can tune the ranges without guessing from the graded picture.

Select an adjustment clip, then tick Show Selection in the Qualifier section of the Color tab, or choose View ▸ Show Selection. Do the same again to turn it off. It’s off to begin with and has no keyboard shortcut. The Qualifier section only appears while every selected clip is an adjustment clip.

The checkbox and the menu item are the same switch, and the menu item has a checkmark while it’s on. The menu item is dimmed while Show Selection is off and no adjustment clip is selected.

The preview shows What it means
White The clip’s grade applies in full here.
Black The grade doesn’t touch this pixel.
Grey The grade applies in part, as it does across a range’s soft edge.

The picture is the selection as the clip really uses it, with a few things to keep in mind:

  • Blur and Invert are included, and so is any matte cutting the clip.
  • The clip’s Strength isn’t applied. A clip at 50 % still draws white where it’s fully selected.
  • Layers in front of the clip are left out, so a title on top doesn’t hide the selection.
  • The preview is black whenever the clip isn’t on the frame, such as when the playhead is outside it.
  • With no range turned on, the qualifier picks everything, so the whole frame is white. With Invert on as well, it’s black.

A Selection tag shows in the preview’s top-left corner while the switch is on. It sits beside the Ungraded tag, and moves into the corner when Show Ungraded is off. See Preview tags.

Show Selection shows one clip at a time, the first selected adjustment clip.

  • Select a different adjustment clip and it moves to that one.
  • Select something else, or nothing, so that no adjustment clip is selected, and it turns off.

Show Selection changes this window’s preview and the Preview Window, and nothing else. An export and Save Frame… never see it.

It isn’t an edit, so it makes no undo step and the project doesn’t change. It belongs to the window and isn’t saved, so a new window starts with it off. See Grade view tools are never saved.

  • Scopes read the preview’s frame, so while Show Selection is on they measure the grey picture, not the graded one.
  • It can be on at the same time as Show Ungraded. The clips behind the adjustment clip then lose their grades, so the selection is worked out from their ungraded picture.

render_frame can draw this same grey picture for any frame. Pass an adjustment clip’s id as selection. The tool works the same whether the View menu switch is on or off, and it leaves the switch alone. If the id isn’t an adjustment clip in this project, the tool stops with an error naming selection. See Check the picture: render_frame.
