Encoder speed

The Speed row sets how long the AV1 encoder works on each frame. A longer time gives a smaller file, so it’s a choice between waiting less and sending less.

export

In the export sheet, choose AV1 (MP4) or AV1 (WebM) in Format, then pick a row in Speed. The row sits under Format, or under Dynamic Range in an HDR project.

Speed What it does SVT-AV1 preset
Faster The quickest export and the largest file. 8
Balanced The default. 6
Smaller file The slowest export and the smallest file. 4

The footnote names your choice, for example AV1 · MP4 · Balanced, and the estimate in the readout follows it, for example Estimated time: about 25 s. The estimate is only a guide. Its figures come from an idle Apple M2 Max, so a slower or busy Mac, or a heavy timeline, takes longer.

The rate from Quality is the cap at every speed, and each speed is tuned to match HEVC’s picture at that rate. So Speed moves the time and the file size, not the quality you asked for.

Measured on 10 seconds of 4K camera footage on an Apple M2 Max, exported as AV1 (MP4):

Speed Time at 4K File at 4K Time at 1080p File at 1080p
Faster 7.1 s 27 % larger 2.4 s 4 % larger
Balanced 14.0 s The baseline 4.2 s The baseline
Smaller file 19.9 s 12 % smaller 5.8 s 5 % smaller

The file size Faster adds is much greater at 4K than at 1080p, where it costs little.

Speed changes the memory an export uses too. Faster measured about 1.3 GB at 1080p and 4.6 GB at 4K, Balanced about 2.2 GB and 7.5 GB, and Smaller file about 2.4 GB and 8.1 GB. AV1 and VP9 exports share a quarter of the Mac’s memory, and a job that would go over it waits for memory in the Export Queue.

  • On every other format Speed is greyed out and keeps your last choice. That includes VP9 (WebM) and VP9 with Alpha (WebM), because VP9 has one speed.
  • The choice is remembered with the rest of the sheet and stored in presets.

An agent passes encoder_speed to export, as faster, balanced or smaller. balanced is the default. It works on av1 and av1_webm only, and any other format returns an error. The finished export’s result names the speed used. See Export: start, then poll.
