Show Ungraded

Show Ungraded is a before and after switch. It bypasses every grade at once and shows the preview as if no clip were graded, so you can check what your grade is doing against the picture you started from.

Menu
View ▸ Show Ungraded
Keys
⌃⌘U
Agent tools
render_frame

Press ⌃⌘U, or choose View ▸ Show Ungraded. Press it again to go back to the graded picture. The menu item has a checkmark while it’s on, and it’s always available.

While it’s on, every clip’s Light, Color, Wheels, Curves and Look are set to neutral in this window’s preview and the Preview Window. That includes nested clips, clips in a matte and adjustment clips, so the grade an adjustment clip puts on everything behind it goes too.

The project doesn’t change. It isn’t an edit, and it makes no undo step.

It’s all or nothing. There’s no split-screen or wipe comparison, and no switch that bypasses one clip’s grade.

Scopes read the preview’s frame, so they follow the switch and measure the ungraded picture.

An Ungraded tag shows in the preview’s top-left corner while the switch is on, so you can’t mistake the plain picture for your grade. See Preview tags.

Show Ungraded only takes away the grade. These aren’t part of the grade, so they stay on:

  • A camera-log conversion on the media. It’s how the file is read, so turning it off wouldn’t give you the true source.
  • Filters.
  • The chroma key.
  • Placement, and everything else about a clip, such as its opacity and blend mode.

Show Ungraded, Show Selection and the scopes only change how this window shows the picture. Each belongs to the window, each is off in a new window, and nothing about them is saved.

None of them reaches an export or Save Frame…, which always use the graded picture. The thumbnails in the Look gallery ignore Show Ungraded too.

Pass ungraded: true to render_frame to draw a frame as if no clip were graded. It’s false by default, and the tool’s reply says the frame has every grade removed. The tool works the same whether the View menu switch is on or off, and it leaves the switch alone. See Check the picture: render_frame.
