Buttons and context menus

Most commands live in the menu bar, and Menus lists them. This page covers the rest: the buttons that do something no menu item does, and the menus you open with a right-click.

Most buttons in the toolbar and the timeline bar repeat a menu item, and their tooltips give its shortcut. These have no menu item at all.

Button Where What it does
Loop Toolbar, at the end of the transport buttons Turns looping on and off. Playback repeats the in/out range when one is set, and the whole timeline when none is. The button is dimmed while Loop is off.
Zoom Out and Zoom In (− and +) Timeline bar Zoom the timeline out or in by a step.
Timeline Zoom slider Timeline bar, between − and + Sets the timeline zoom about the middle of the view. The slider is logarithmic, so the same distance always changes the zoom by the same ratio.
Add Text (Aa) Timeline bar Adds a text clip at the playhead, the same as T. See Text clips.
Add Shape Timeline bar Opens the shape menu. See Add Shape.

These have their own control, and do the same as a View menu item:

Button Where The same as
Fit Timeline Timeline bar, after + View ▸ Fit Timeline (⇧Z)
Snap Timeline bar View ▸ Snapping (N)
S, M and L Timeline bar View ▸ Timeline Track Height: Small, Medium and Large tracks
Zoom popup: Fit, 50%, 100%, 200% Toolbar The canvas zoom. View ▸ Zoom In, Zoom Out and Zoom to Fit move through the same four steps.
Safe Toolbar View ▸ Safe Areas

The Add Shape button in the timeline bar is the only way to choose a shape to add. There’s no menu bar item for it. Clip ▸ Add Background ▸ Solid Color also makes a shape clip, but only a white rectangle the canvas’s size.

  1. Move the playhead to where the shape should start.
  2. Click Add Shape.
  3. Choose Rectangle, Ellipse, Line or Arrow.

The shape goes on the front track at the playhead. If it doesn’t fit there, Frame Job adds a new track above everything and puts it on that. The new clip is selected, and the undo step names the shape, for example Add Ellipse. See Shape clips.

Right-click or ⌃-click opens a menu in four places in the editor:

A right-click on a clip, the ruler or the timeline’s corner opens no menu.

A menu acts on what you clicked, not on the selection or the current track.

While you record, the recording status item in the macOS menu bar has a menu too, and a plain click opens it.

Right-click a track’s header, one of the buttons on it, or the empty part of its lane. The menu is for that track, and its checkmarks show that track’s own state.

Item What it does Undo step
Hide Video Turns the track’s picture off or on. See Hide and lock tracks. Hide Track
Mute Audio Turns the track’s sound off or on. Mute Track
Lock Track Locks or unlocks the track. Lock Track
Solo Solos the track, or stops soloing it. See Mute and solo tracks. Solo Track
Mix… Opens the track’s mix panel. See Track volume and pan.
Matte ▸ Off, Alpha, Inverted Alpha, Luma or Inverted Luma, with a checkmark on the track’s mode. Choosing the mode it already has beeps. See Matte tracks. Track Matte
Remove Track Removes the track. If it holds clips, Frame Job asks first and says how many go with it. Greyed when it’s the only track. Remove Track

Remove Track here is the way to delete one empty track that isn’t the front-most one, because an empty track has no clip to select. Track ▸ Remove Empty Tracks deletes every empty track at once.

Right-click a row in the Media tab. The menu acts on that file, whatever the list’s selection is.

Item What it does
Insert at Playhead Places the file at the playhead, pushing later clips along, and selects its row. Greyed for a LUT. See Insert and overwrite.
Overwrite at Playhead Places the file at the playhead, replacing what’s in the way, and selects its row. Greyed for a LUT.
Reveal in Timeline Selects the clips that use the file, scrolls to the first one and switches to the Clip tab. Greyed when no clip on the timeline itself uses the file, which includes a file no clip uses and one used only inside a nest.
Reveal in Finder Shows the file in the Finder: the original, or the project’s copy when there’s no original. It beeps when it has neither.
Relink… Points this entry at a file you choose. It takes the new file’s duration, size, frame rate and its audio, video and alpha flags. Frame Job won’t relink to a file of another kind, and a clip past the end of a shorter file is shortened to end with it. See Relink missing media.
Remove Removes the file from the project. An unused file goes at once. A used file asks first, and its clips go with it, including clips inside nests. When the file is a LUT, the clips using it keep their place and lose the look, and any file it converts loses its Camera Log. See Remove media.

Right-click a row’s label, slider, checkbox or pop-up, or the space beside them. The menu shows only what applies to that row, and with nothing that applies there’s no menu. A text field keeps its own menu.

Item When it’s there What it does
Remove from action N The selected action changes this row Takes the row out of that action.
Go to action M Another action changes this row Selects that action.
Reset to default The row has a default Puts the row back to its default. Greyed when it’s already there.
Set end value to default The row has a default and animates, and an action is selected Takes the place of Reset to default, and sets the row’s value at the action’s end. Greyed when it’s already there.

On a row the selected action changes, the ◆ in the left gutter turns into × when you hover over it. Click it to remove the row from the action, the same as Remove from action N. See Set what an action animates to.

Right-click a cell of the curve editor’s channel strip in the Color tab. Reset Master, Reset Red, Reset Green, Reset Blue, Reset Hue or Reset Sat puts that one curve back to flat, and is greyed when it already is.

This one is in the macOS menu bar, not the editor. While a recording runs its time shows there, and a click opens its menu:

  • Recording keyboard shortcuts, a dimmed row shown only while shortcuts are being recorded
  • Pause Recording, or Resume Recording while paused
  • Stop Recording

Its tooltip says whether Frame Job is recording or paused. If you quit while a display or window recording is running with the recorder panel hidden, Frame Job opens this menu so you can stop it.

If macOS hides the item, for example behind the notch, File ▸ Stop Recording and Pause Recording still work. See The menu-bar item.
