Zoom and pan the preview

Zoom the preview to look closely at the picture or to place something precisely, then pan to reach the part you want. Zooming is only a way of looking: it changes nothing in the project, makes no undo step and is never exported. To zoom in on part of the video so your viewers see it, use Zoom to Region or Auto Zoom.

The popup in the toolbar sets how large the picture appears. Its stops are Fit, 50%, 100% and 200%. It always shows the zoom the canvas is at, however you got there.

Fit sizes the canvas to the pane and follows the pane as it changes. At 100%, one canvas pixel takes one point on screen.

Each window starts at Fit, and the zoom isn’t saved with the project.

View ▸ Zoom In ⌘+ or ⌘= Goes to the next stop up. Greyed at 200%.
View ▸ Zoom Out ⌘- Goes to the next stop down. Greyed at Fit.
View ▸ Zoom to Fit ⌘0 Goes straight back to Fit and centres the canvas. Greyed at Fit.

These zoom the preview. To zoom the timeline, see Zoom and scroll the timeline.

Pinch on a trackpad over the preview, or scroll with ⌥ or ⌘ held, to step through the same four stops. The stops are separate steps, so a gesture has to build up a little before it takes the next one.

When the zoomed canvas is bigger than the pane, there are two ways to move it:

  • Scroll over the preview.
  • Hold Space and drag. If you’ve been working elsewhere, click the canvas first, or Space plays and pauses instead of panning.

You can only pan in a direction where the canvas overflows the pane, so you can’t drag the canvas out of view. While the canvas fits, a plain scroll does nothing.

Moving between stops keeps your pan, pulled back if it no longer fits. Going back to Fit centres the canvas again.

After you’ve clicked the canvas, Space still plays and pauses. Frame Job can’t tell a tap from a pan until you let go, so playback starts or stops on the release rather than the press. If you panned while Space was down, the release does nothing to playback.

  • The stops count up from Fit in order, whatever size Fit happens to be. On a small canvas in a large pane, 50% can be smaller than Fit.
  • While the canvas fits, holding Space and dragging a clip moves the clip as usual, and playback toggles when you let go of Space.
