New Project from Range

New Project from Range opens a new project holding exactly the timeline’s in/out range, moved to start at 0. Use it to lift a section out of a long edit to work on by itself, such as a short from a full episode. To make it vertical, run Make Vertical Version in the new project. The project you made it from doesn’t change. If you only want a file of that section, export the range instead.

  1. Set the in/out range with Mark ▸ Set In (I) and Mark ▸ Set Out (O).

  2. Choose File ▸ New Project from Range….

The new project opens in its own window straight away. There’s no sheet to fill in, and the command has no key.

The item is dimmed when no range is set, while a nest is open, and while a sheet is on the window.

  • Clips across an edge are cut there, the same way Split cuts them. This happens on every track, locked or not, and a linked pair stays linked.
  • Clips wholly inside the range are kept. Everything outside it goes.
  • A transition across an edge becomes a hard start or end. The piece beyond the edge is dropped, and at the In edge the incoming piece starts with no transition.
  • Markers inside the range are kept, on the same moments of the edit. A marker exactly on the Out frame isn’t kept.
  • Tracks and the canvas stay as they are, including any track that ends up empty and any lock.
  • Media no kept clip plays is left out, unless a kept clip’s look or a kept file’s colour setting still uses it as a LUT, or a kept clip’s Hide While Silent follows it. Nests no kept clip reaches are left out too.

The new project brings what’s already been measured, so nothing is measured again when it opens. For each media file it keeps:

  • filmstrips, waveforms and loudness
  • voice detection and sound-matching features
  • transcripts read on this Mac
  • analyses, such as shots, faces, people and salient regions, masks and sound events
  • the backwards render of a reversed clip

Media files themselves are never copied. The new project points at the same files as the original.

Speed ramp, isolated voice and voice effect renders don’t come along. They’re made again when needed.

A transcript from AssemblyAI goes to the new project only once AssemblyAI has been told to delete its copy. One still waiting for that delete stays in the original project.

The graphics the kept clips draw come along, and so does every font and picture of the project’s graphics, whether a kept clip uses it or not. A graphic’s kept versions don’t.

The new project opens untitled with unsaved changes, named after its parent with “ (range)” added, such as “Interview (range)”. Closing it asks whether to save.

It starts at the range. There’s no undo step back to the whole timeline, and the original project gets no undo step either, because nothing happened to it.

If the range can’t be kept, the command beeps and shows why at the foot of the inspector, and no project opens.

The message says What to do
“Clip N is a nest across the range’s edge; a nest clip has no in point, so a cut there would replay it from its start. Move the edge, or open the nest and unnest it.” Do one of those. A nest clip can’t be cut at an edge.
“Nothing plays between … and … ticks.” The range holds no clips. Move it over something.
“Keeping … to … ticks would leave clips A and B overlapping by … ticks, more than half of the shorter piece (… ticks); move an edge further from their transition.” An edge would cut a clip too short for a transition inside the range. Move the edge.

These messages give times in ticks, 600,000 to the second, so 1,200,000 ticks is 2 seconds into the timeline.

The command also beeps when In and Out are on the same frame, because the range is empty.

new_project_from_range takes the range as times on the top-level timeline, so it doesn’t need the in/out range set, and it won’t run while a nest is open. It can also save the new project at a path first, adding .framejob if the path lacks it, as long as nothing exists there and no other open project holds it. The Assistant asks you before it does that. It returns the new project and how much came along with it. See Tools: projects and history.
