Turn a clip's picture or sound off
A clip has two halves, its picture and its sound, and each can be switched off while the clip stays where it is. A switched-off half adds nothing to the picture or the mix, and it comes back when the half is switched on again.

Turn a half off
Section titled “Turn a half off”There’s no switch for this in the inspector. Commands flip the halves as part of what they do:
| Command | What it switches |
|---|---|
| Clip ▸ Detach Audio | Turns the clip’s sound off and adds a sound-only copy on the track below, with its picture off. |
| Clip ▸ Attach Audio | Merges a detached pair back into one clip with its sound on. |
| Clip ▸ Switch by Speaker… | Can turn off the picture of the camera clips it replaces, and their sound when Mute the cameras’ own sound is ticked. |
To silence a clip’s sound by hand, use Mute on the Sound tab. To hide its picture, set its opacity to 0 or hide the track.
How the clip looks
Section titled “How the clip looks”| Switched off | On the timeline |
|---|---|
| The picture of a movie clip | It reads as an audio clip, with the audio tint and symbol, and has no filmstrip. |
| The sound | It has no waveform. |
| Both | It’s dimmed, like a clip on a hidden track. |
A clip with its sound off has no Sound tab in the inspector, because there’s nothing there to adjust. Its Picture tab stays, even with the picture off.
Good to know
Section titled “Good to know”- A clip with its sound off can’t be transcribed, and Remove Silences doesn’t count it as audible.
- Copies keep the switches of the clip they came from.
- Paste Attributes leaves the target’s switches alone.
With an agent
Section titled “With an agent”set_enabled switches either half of any clip directly, which no command in the app does on its own. Give it video, audio or both, as true or false, and a half you leave out stays as it is. See Tools: moving and trimming.
