Export a range

An export writes the whole timeline unless you tell it otherwise. Use Range: on the export sheet to write only the passage between your in and out points, such as one section of a long project or a clip for review.

  1. On the timeline, set the in/out range with I and O.

  2. Choose File ▸ Export….

  3. In Range:, choose In/out range.

  4. Check the length in the readout under the controls, then choose Export… or Add to Queue.

Choice What it writes
Whole project The whole timeline. This is the default.
In/out range Only the range set on the timeline. It’s listed only when a range is set.

With no range set, the popup is greyed out on Whole project.

The range is rounded to whole frames at the export’s rate and kept inside the project. If you change Frame rate:, it lands on that rate’s frames, so its length can move by less than a frame. The readout always shows the length the file will have.

The sheet remembers In/out range with the rest of your last export, and a preset can store it too. On a project with no range, either one falls back to Whole project.

An export always writes the top-level timeline, even when you’re working inside a nest. So it can’t use a range that belongs to a nest.

While a nest is open, the popup is greyed out on Whole project. If the nest has a range of its own, the popup’s tooltip says why that range isn’t offered.

To export that passage, leave the nest with ⌘↑ and set the range on the timeline. A range stays with the timeline or nest it was set in, so opening or leaving a nest clears it.

A file’s sound is exactly as long as the range it exports, including when a clip in it plays faster or slower. Frame Job cuts the sound at the range’s end, and if the sound runs out early it fills the rest with silence.

  • If a range turns out to be empty, for example one that lies past the end of the project after an edit, the sheet says the export range is empty and Export… and Add to Queue stay greyed out. Set the range again, or choose a different one.
  • Animated GIF and Animated PNG files have a limit on their frame count, so a long range may not fit. See Animated GIF and PNG.
  • Burn in timecode reads project time, so a file from a range shows the timeline’s timecode, not a count from zero.
  • Chapters explains how a range export treats chapter markers.

export takes range: project, the default, or in_out, which writes the range set with set_range. With no range set, in_out gets an error instead of a file. See Export: start, then poll.
