Hear a scrub

When you click or drag along the ruler, you hear the sound under the playhead. Use it to find a word or a beat by ear.

Where
Click or drag along the timeline ruler

Drag along the ruler. Playback pauses first if it was running. As the playhead reaches new frames, Frame Job plays about 80 ms of the mix forward from it, with a 5 ms fade at each end so the pieces don’t click. A fast drag skips frames, because each new piece waits until the last one has almost played.

  • A click on the ruler plays one piece.
  • Hold the mouse still and the sound stops within about a tenth of a second.
  • Let go and it stops.

Dragging left plays each piece forwards from the playhead, not backwards, so a word stays recognisable.

A scrub plays the mix you’d hear in playback: each clip’s volume, fades, ducking, pan and mono, each track’s volume and pan, mute and solo, and each clip’s sound processing.

Three things differ from playback:

  • A clip’s sound processing, such as its compressor or noise reduction, starts fresh in each piece, so it can sound different from a steady play.
  • A track’s compressor and limiter aren’t in a scrub.
  • The level meter stays still.

Scrub audio is always on, with no setting, no key and no agent tool. To silence it, mute or solo tracks, or turn down your Mac’s volume.

  • Only a scrub on the ruler is heard. Stepping with ← and →, Go in the Markers list, and an agent moving the playhead are all silent.
  • A scrub doesn’t use the microphone, so it never asks for that permission.
