The menu-bar item

While a recording runs, Frame Job puts an item in the menu bar. For a display or a window the panel is off screen, so this item is the recording’s control, wherever you’re working.

The item appears when the recording starts, and shows the elapsed time as m:ss, then h:mm:ss past an hour. Hover over it and its tooltip says which state it’s in.

State The menu bar shows Tooltip Its menu
Recording A coral ● and the running time “Frame Job is recording” Pause Recording, Stop Recording
Paused ❚❚ and the time, held still “Frame Job’s recording is paused” Resume Recording, Stop Recording

It needs no permission. It appears for an agent’s recording too, so you can pause or stop one. It comes down the moment the recording ends, before the recording has landed.

Click the item for its menu.

  • Pause Recording pauses. The row then reads Resume Recording.
  • Stop Recording stops the recording, running or paused, and adds it to your project.

The time keeps ticking while the menu is open, so you can read it before you decide. Start, pause and stop has the other places to do this. If you choose Quit Frame Job while the panel is hidden for a screen recording, Frame Job opens this menu instead of quitting.

While a recording records shortcuts, a ⌨︎ mark follows the ● or ❚❚, and the menu starts with a greyed-out Recording keyboard shortcuts row. Both show whether the recording is running or paused, and they hold for a recording an agent started with shortcuts on.

The item is sized once, so the other items in your menu bar don’t shift as the seconds tick, when the hours appear, or at a pause. It’s sized for times up to 9:59:59, and a little wider when it shows the keyboard mark. Past 9:59:59 the label is wider than that.

macOS can drop the item from a crowded menu bar or behind the notch. File ▸ Stop Recording and File ▸ Pause Recording still work once you switch to Frame Job.
