Chapters

Chapters let someone jump through a long video in their player. In Frame Job they come from markers with Chapter turned on, with nothing to set on the export sheet.

Mark a chapter on the timeline, then export to any format that writes an MP4, MOV, M4A or WebM file. Chapter markers become the file’s chapters, in time order.

  • Names. A chapter takes its marker’s name. An unnamed marker becomes “Chapter 1”, “Chapter 2” and so on, counted over the chapter markers only, so removing a plain marker never renumbers them. A name of only spaces counts as unnamed.
  • Lengths. Each chapter runs to the next one, and the last runs to the end of the file. Time before the first chapter marker belongs to no chapter, so put a marker on the first frame if you want the file to open in one.
  • Queued jobs. A job writes the chapters the timeline had when you confirmed it, whatever you do to the markers afterwards. See A queued job’s snapshot.

WAV, AIFF, Animated GIF and Animated PNG files have no chapters. Neither do stems: only the mix carries them.

An export of a range keeps the chapters inside the range, with their times counted from the start of the file. The chapter already running when the range starts opens the file, and a chapter starting at or after the range’s end is left out.

Say the timeline has chapters at 0:00, 1:00 and 3:00, named Intro, Demo and Outro, and you export from 2:00 to 4:00. The file has two chapters: Demo at 0:00 and Outro at 1:00.

An unnamed chapter keeps its number from the whole timeline, so the third chapter marker is still “Chapter 3” in a file that holds only two.
